Updating and uninstalling

Check for a release, install it, then compare installed and running versions. Installing new files and restarting a running component are separate steps.

Check and install

pmux update --check
pmux update
pmux versions

The updater selects stable releases by default and verifies downloaded assets before activation. A failed or interrupted download does not activate partial files. Use pmux update --pre only when you want prereleases.

On macOS, choose Check for Updates… in the app menu. When an update is available, the dialog shows its version and release notes. Install and Relaunch installs the verified release and requests a safe host restart. A component that cannot restart safely remains on its running version until later.

Automatic checks run on launch and daily by default. Turn off Automatically Check for Updates in the app menu or set automatic_update_checks = false in config.toml. Manual checks remain available.

Restart safely

pmux restart --plan
pmux restart --host
pmux versions

A host restart saves restorable views and reconnects managed sessions. It can defer when the window owns blank terminals or other views that cannot be restored safely. Close those local terminals and reopen the app when instructed.

The daemon restarts only when it has no sessions. With active sessions, it defers to avoid stopping their programs. A successful install therefore does not guarantee that every running component has switched to the new version.

Roll back

pmux update --rollback

Rollback restores the previous verified installation. On macOS, Roll Back Last Update… is also available in the app menu. Rollback requires a previous installation to have been retained; it is not a general release-version selector.

Uninstall

Preview removal before confirming it:

pmux uninstall --dry-run
pmux uninstall --keep-data

--keep-data preserves configuration and saved Spaces. Without it, removal includes the app's settings and data. On macOS, the command removes the pmux link only if it matches the link created by Prismattyc; it leaves other installations alone.
