The hardware changed twice. The protocol never did.

TTY — the teletypewriter

Unix was first operated from teleprinters. The hardware is gone; the name stayed as the terminal abstraction — line discipline, echo, job control.

VT100 — the video terminal

DEC's CRT family set the escape sequences every emulator still speaks. ESC [ 31 m makes text red, then and now.

The daemon owns the PTYs. Pane children keep running when every viewer leaves; reattach restores the live screen and scrollback.

Sessions are mailboxes. Send, claim, commit. The doorbell writes into the pane PTY — indistinguishable from keystrokes.
